There is a YouTuber named J.J. McCullough who makes videos about cultural objects (flags, souvenirs, snack food, etc.), and one of his gimmicks is to take an existing list of some of these items and speak about each one. The list might be something that is a list of things already (like the 50 states of America), or he might outsource the list to sources with dubious degrees of authority (all the Washington DC landmarks in a kid’s activity book at the airport in DC). I quite like this somewhat arbitrary means of making a list of “important things.” So that is what I am going to do today.

In May of 2024, the Canada Post published a booklet of four stamps showcasing four graphic novels by Canadian cartoonists: Chester Brown, Michel Rabagliati, Seth, and the cousins Jillian and Mariko Tamaki. Canada Post says of the set, “While Canada Post has issued stamps featuring comic book superheroes, it has never before showcased the unique work created by Canadian graphic novelists.” They have an awareness that there are other kinds of comics besides superheroes. Good job, Canada Post! Off the top of my head, I could think of a dozen or so great Canadian cartoonists deserving the honor of being on a postage stamp. Canada Post chose four (five if you count the Tamaki cousins as two).
