New Zines in the House of Pan
Zinefest was yesterday, and I made a very small profit and got to see a lot of local publishing and creativity. A lot of people were dressed up in quasi-Ren Fair outfits. That sartorial choice didn’t require historical accuracy apparently, as these two mushroom girls demonstrate.
My 1/2 table was modest and I shared a small portion of its surface with Superpresent, a locally produced magazine of art and writing.
For this show, I created three new tiny zines, each of which was 8 pages of black-and-white drawings—about the simplest possible zine to produce.
I had several ideas for zines, but then, influeced by the huge Philip Guston show at the MFAH, I decided on drawing canvases (a subject that Guston himself returned to often). They are all blank canvases. This worked out pretty well, so I went for books next—another favorite subject of Guston’s.
I was pleased with these two, and inspired by Gustons paintings of the mid-60s, when he painted small square canvases of ordinary items (before painting his larger Klansman paintings), I followed hius lead.
These are the three very modest zines I produce for Zinefest. And they can be yours! I am selling them in my Storenvy store. Cheap—they are just 50¢! And I am also selling the orignal art for a bargain price, as well.
