September
“Every September, at the onset of the first cold front, there should begin a cult of the Feast of Deliverance. Citywide celebrations would demarcate the occasion. At last relief is in sight.”
Mirage, Wolde Ayele, 1986, Hothouse, p. 39
I think about this quote every September. This tiny book, Mirage, deserves to be reprinted. But to do so, one would have to locate and get permission from Wolde Ayele. I wrote to the editor of Hothouse, Philip Lopate, who had been part of the creative writing program at UH during the 80s, trying to locate Ayele. Lopate told me that Ayele seemed to have dropped off the map, alas.
As for the first cold front of the fall, well, these first few days of September have been surprisingly mild, although still with highs in the high 80s.
