I have been featured in two videos by comics superfan zinesters recently. The operative word is “two.” The most recent one dropped today. It is by John Kelly. a long-time alternative comics fan, who has been an active participant in the New York City alternative scene—think RAW and all the “spiegelboys,” as Pater Bagge used to refer to them. Recently he has been diving deep on certain specific events in comics history. Dummy has produced two zines, the first a deep dive into Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and the many alternative cartoonists who worked on that show.
In 1991, I was working for Fantagraphics, and we were approached by the largest non-profit art space in Seattle, the Center on Contemporary Art, to curate an exhibit of alternative comics. I was of course eager to participate, and the exhibit—Misfit Lit—was a huge project that traveled to multiple art venues across the U.S.A. and Canada. I I remain proud of the exhibit and the work we did putting it together 34 years ago.
Please enjoy Misfit Lit 1991 by John Kelly, featuring Daniel Clowes, Jim Woodring, Peter Bagge, Roberta Gregory, Larry Reid, and me.
