I'm old enough and have voted in enough "most important elections of our lifetime" to cling to a little hope that this one will not lead to the dire disaster that I fear, as those did not (bad as the outcomes of some were). Perhaps our American system will prove strong enough to survive again this time. But I also know enough history to know that it may not, and that the outcomes this time may be dire indeed. It CAN happen here, as it has other places in other times. There are forces of history that humans can't control - not even those with the hubris to think they can. If that weren't the case there would still be a Roman Empire and a Reich. Now I find myself repeating often the Serenity Prayer I included in a recent Substack post, along with "One day at a time." (Yes, I'm one of them!) And hoping.
I look forward to reading more, Rob! Bring that book with you to Austin, please.
I will!
I had no idea just three days ago how much I would need this book.
