I went to a dance performance at MATCH in Midtown the other day, and while waiting for the show to start, I decided to peek into at Sig’s Lagoon right around the corner.
Do you know of Zac Crain? He was a music writer and photographer in Dallas who passed away (way too young) last summer, and he has a book of photography called “A Pedestrian’s Guide to Dallas” in which he shared the exact sentiment you expressed about only knowing a place when you’ve experienced it at the pace of walking. Oddly, I just recommended this earlier on an another related post on BlueSky. I think you’d dig it. And I love when there are things like this that tie the Texas cities together. There are all kinds of weird, silly rivalries between all the cities but we have more in common than not.
I did not know of him until just now. (But I love Deep Vellum and am slightly envious that Dallas has such an excellent local publisher.) I agree that the rivalry is inane--Houston and Dallas are very similar in my experience.
Great to know, thank you.

I enjoyed Lomax's writing, particularly these road pieces.
Great read and I am going to order this book now.
