Russia invaded Ukraine yesterday. I am sickened by this evil act. A murderous dictatorship invades a democratic nation. But I know that I am powerless to do anything. So I am sitting here, listening to Prokofiev’s symphony #1 in D, drinking a small glass of Khortytsa vodka, imported from Ukraine. Sergey Prokofiev was born in Ukraine, and was a successful composer in the west and in the Soviet Union. He died on March 5, 1953 (a date many celebrate because it was also the day that Stalin died).
Slava Ukraini! from a Ukrainian-American artist. I too am heartsick over Putin waging war on Ukraine. You say you're powerless to do anything, but we're not powerless to lend support to Ukraine in many ways --By expressing sympathy, compassion and generosity to the nation battered by Putin's wrath. By diligently acknowledging the rich historic existence of Ukraine. By forcefully calling out Putin's relentless lies and perversions. And -- by enjoying Ukrainian vodka, Ukrainian music, Ukrainian culture --a wonerful long list. I invite all Houstonians to a Vigil in Support of Ukraine on this Sunday, March 6 --3-6 PM , 901 Bagby St., on the front steps of Houston City Hall. Hope to see you all there ---Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak
