Thanks for taking the time to transcribe all of this. I lived there when I was about 17 in 1990. I had no idea what I was doing creatively at the time, and really still don't- but I had some important experiences there and met some amazing people. I had forgotten about Jim and Bonny. They were incredibly kind people. I remember Lisa Waering's space had a really cool build out that maybe Mark Bradford had help build. (I could be wrong)
It was definitely an urban wilderness at the time. It was great to learn about the warehouse history as far as its initial purpose and businesses, which I didn't know. Good stuff.
Yeah I moved into George Hixson’s old studio. Nestor helped me put in my bathroom and tub. It was really luxurious for CSAW. I loved that space and spent 1991-2001 there. It was like an art commune and hatchery. My work in theater began when I costumed James Gale’s King Lear with Deborah Moore. Good times
It was George Hixson that built out the studio Lisa lived in I believe. Mark Bradford had a warehouse off of Polk St back in then. My years at CSAW were 1988-92, and my studio was located in the back center of the building. I remember during scheduled performances it felt like a secret backstage area, great experience living there.
great article. CSAW saw a industrial/noise scene flourish and had several groups gain wider international appreciation like Voice of Eye and Black Leather Jesus.
